THE LORD'S PRAYER
Text: Luke 11:1–2
1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
After numerous teachings on what to do while praying and what not to do, and after watching Jesus pray so many times, the disciples were compelled to ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. They wanted to know the manner of the Lord's Prayer.
The Lord's Prayer is one of the first scriptures that any child born into a Christian home will learn to recite. However, while it's good for recitation, Jesus was teaching something more than just a memory verse; He was teaching a pattern of prayer or the ingredients of prayer.
So, how do we pray? Or what's the manner of the Lord's Prayer?
SEE GOD AS YOUR FATHER
The first thing Jesus taught was the introduction of God as a Father to us, and our conversation with Him must not just begin with that, but it must be the basis on which we come to Him.
The consciousness of God being a Father to us must be evident when we pray to Him. We must see God as our Father.
Our prayer must come with that relational bonding of a Father and a child relationship.
When some pray, they order God or command Him to do their heart's desire; some pray and say they are provoking God to do some certain things; some "force" His hands.
When you hear this, you wonder if they actually see God or relate to Him as a Father.
You know that God, our Father, gave His begotten Son for the remission of our sins, and the Scripture says, what will He now withhold from us?
If this is the knowledge we have of our Father, our consciousness of Him being our Father will reign supreme while we pray.
HALLOWED BE THY NAME
Furthermore, Jesus immediately spoke about reference to God: "Hallowed be thy name."
The magnificence of God is enough to reference Him while we speak with Him; the ambience of His holiness, the awesomeness of His greatness should fill our hearts while we pray.
And it goes beyond just thanking Him before we request from Him; it's an ingredient that must be present throughout our conversation with Him.
Asking Him with reference, submitting our petitions with absolute fear of His holiness, thanking Him for His capacity to bring about His will, hallowing Him for His sovereignty over the things He will only do according to His time.
This is reference!
This is the Lord's Prayer!
This is how we should pray!
PRAYER
Father, please teach me to pray correctly, in Jesus' Name.
