THE SIMPLICITY OF PRAYER
Text: Matthew 6:7–8
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye need, of before ye ask him.
Taking a step further in the series on prayer, we will need to discuss more on how to pray.
We need to further understand some traits of prayer, and look back at what and how we have been praying, if it was the same thing as the teaching of our Lord.
Prayer Is Simple
One of the traits of prayer is its simplicity; as we have observed from the previous Daily Divine Word, it is not gymnastics. It's just a communication between God and man, and it's very simple.
We complicate prayer because sometimes we see God through the lens of a man; we feel we need to apply pressure or force His hands to bring about our desire, and the truth is God's sovereignty supersedes all. We can't pressure Him or force His hands on anything.
Vain Repetition in Prayer
One of the things we do while praying is how we have mastered the act of vain repetition, and the anchor text explains Jesus' disposition to this.
It is the same thing the heathen do. Religion all over the world offers words to their gods by repeating words; some say the same words while they pray.
In the Southwestern part of Nigeria, the traditional religion would repeat names of their deities and repeat their words of prayer; some would be in some geometric progression. And they do this because they believe that until they repeat these words, their gods might not listen or respond.
However, Jesus said this should not be the way we communicate with our Father, because it's a communication; why use repetitive words?
Our Father knows what our petition was before we present it to Him, and it's not about how loud or repetitive our prayers are that will determine if God hears.
Communicating With God in Faith
When you communicate with God, believe that He hears.
If there is a belief, you will avoid vain repetition; you will communicate as a friend to friend, believing that everything you ask, He hears and will be granted.
Beloved, God is not deaf; He knows what your heart desires before you ask Him.
Let your faith in Him be more than your emotions. Communicate with Him and enjoy yourself before your Father.
That's THE SIMPLICITY OF PRAYER.
Reflection
Prayer is simple; don't apply logic to a simple entity.
