Text: Luke 15:20-31; 24:45
20 - And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 - And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22 - But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23 - And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
24 - For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
25 - Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.
26 - And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
27 - And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
28 - And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
29 - And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
30 - But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
31 - And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
Luke.24.45 - Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.
One of the most painful events to happen to a man is to have his needs sorted and yet not know, but go about borrowing and languishing over it, whereas it has been provided. The issue of understanding isn't just having the knowledge of a thing but knowing beyond the letters the reality of what is known.
A man can have so much, and he has no idea. It is one thing to just know that all things are for your sake; it's another thing to have an understanding that it is true.
The elder brother of the prodigal son lacked this, he didn't have an understanding of what he owns in his father, he also doesn't understand the riches of his father, if had known, he won't be jealous of the father's disposition to his returned brother, if he had known that what the younger brother took away doesn't diminish his father's riches and that all what the father has belongs to him, he probably would have lived a better life in that reality, but he had no understanding.
While the disciples believed Jesus and also believed that he is the Son of God, they had no understanding of everything he said to them; they believed his words, but they didn't understand them. After his resurrection, in fact, they never understood that Jesus was going to resurrect, but they believed. When he appeared to them, he had to open their understanding before explaining the scriptures to them.
Do you really understand the God you have come to know? Do you understand that God is capable of everything he said in the scriptures, and even to you? Do you understand what the riches of your father are and how plentiful he is in mercy? Do you understand the power and the inheritance of God's children? Do you? If your answer is yes, are you living in the reality of this? Your life is a product of the understanding you have. If you understand God, you will love him better and serve him better.
Can you pray now that the Lord will open your understanding so that you can understand the scriptures?
