God’s Will: Understanding God’s Plan for Your Life
Text: Matthew 18:14 (KJV)
“Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.”
One of the words many people seem not to have a clear understanding of is destiny. People often attach mysterious happenings to destiny, and sometimes the idea of destiny becomes a source of consolation during times of tragedy.
While destiny is real, we need to understand that not everything that happens to a person is necessarily God’s will for that person’s life. We may struggle to fully understand the subject of destiny, but having a clear understanding of God’s will gives us a solid foundation for understanding God’s agenda and purpose for our lives.
Jesus revealed an important truth about God’s will when He clearly stated that it is not the will of our Father in heaven that even one of His little ones should perish.
Everyone who has received Christ and has been given the right to become a child of God has a relationship with God and can walk according to His purpose. John 1:12 says:
«“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”»
God does not desire destruction for His children. However, a person can choose to walk outside God’s will. The story of the prodigal son illustrates this clearly. He left his father’s house and chose a path that was contrary to his father’s desire, yet his father’s love and desire for him remained.
Understanding God’s Will
When you understand, through spiritual knowledge and wisdom, what God’s will for your life is, you will walk carefully and intentionally. You will become more deliberate about the decisions you make and the steps you take.
You will not simply accept everything that comes your way as “destiny.” Instead, you will learn to examine your choices and circumstances in the light of God’s Word.
You will be able to arise and say YES to God’s will and know when to say NO to what is contrary to His purpose.
The Bible gives us a beautiful picture of God’s thoughts toward His people in Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
God’s thoughts toward His people are not thoughts of evil. His desire is that we walk with Him and fulfil His purpose for our lives.
Therefore, don't simply call everything that happens “destiny.” Seek God’s will. Know His Word. Walk in His purpose.
Your life should not be governed merely by what happens around you; it should be guided by what God has revealed through His Word and by His direction.
THINK TANK
Your destiny is great. Give no space to the devil’s will.
PRAYER
Father, permit only Your will to be established in my life. Help me to understand Your purpose, recognize Your direction, and walk in obedience to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
CONFESSION
I know the thoughts God has toward me. They are good and perfect, and they will surely give me an expected end. I choose God’s will, and I will walk in His purpose for my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
